The Northwestern Wildcats finished with four wins in the Big Ten last season, so they clearly have a lot to do before they can compete in the conference. Unfortunately, the Wildcats’ first few games in conference play will be brutal in the upcoming season.
Northwestern will open up Big Ten play against the Wisconsin Badgers. Then it will play at Michigan, at Iowa, against Illinois, against Michigan State and then at Indiana. Heck, even the following game against the Purdue Boilermakers will be tough.
We all should know by now that the Big Ten is one of the best conferences in college basketball. Big Ten teams always beat up on each other. Still, the Wildcats’ first six games of conference play are really tough. They could very easily go 0-6 in the conference. All six of the opponents listed above could be ranked when they face them.
The contest against Illinois could be the easiest one, but the Fighting Illini still managed to make the NCAA tournament last season.
Northwestern finished last season with a 13-19 record. It will help that Drew Crawford will be back, but who knows how much he can do for the team in the 2013-14 season. This was not a good team to say the least and it probably will not compete in the Big Ten once again, especially with such a tough schedule to open up conference play.
Hopefully Northwestern can get some kind of momentum before Big Ten play begins because it will dearly need it.
