The Akron Zips won the MAC tournament last season and earned a spot in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. However, will they finish in second place in the conference standings in the 2013-14 college basketball season?

In a recent article previewing the team for the upcoming season, ESPN is projecting that the Zips will finish second in the conference. In front of them is Kent State.

Akron finished last season with an overall record of 26-7 and a MAC record of 14-2. Kent State finished with an overall record of 21-14 and a conference record of 9-7.

However, the loss of Zeke Marshall is going to have a major impact on this team. Marshall was a beast in the blocking department last year. He averaged 3.7 blocks per game, but also led the team in scoring with 13 points per game. His seven rebounds per game will also be missed.

It will be interesting to see how much worse the team does in the upcoming season without Marshall. I am sure it will not be as good, though. Making the NCAA tournament is still not out of the question, but Akron likely will have to win the MAC tournament to do so. The Mid-American just does not get a whole lot of teams into the dance on a yearly basis.

Regardless, the Zips are going to compete in the MAC and it is not like Kent State is going to run away with the conference title. There is no guarantee that it will win the conference and there is no guarantee that Akron will win the conference. That is why the games are played or that is at least what I am told.
