The Connecticut Huskies will be playing in the AAC in the 2013-14 college basketball season, but will they be contenders or pretenders in the conference?
Not only will the Huskies be contenders, but they will have the talent to come away with the conference title. That tends to happen when you have one of the best backcourts in the nation.
Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright and Omar Calhoun will make up one heck of a backcourt. Napier averaged 17.1 points per game last season, Boatright averaged 15.4 points per game and Calhoun averaged 11.1 points per game.
Who knows how the frontcourt will work out for this team, though. Connecticut was not a good rebounding team last year and it ranked 243rd in that department (33.1 rebounds per game). Still, it should have no problem scoring.
It also helps that the team will actually be playing to make the NCAA tournament. The Huskies were not allowed to dance last season, but will be eligible to do so in the upcoming one. They should have no problem achieving that feat.
Connecticut will have to go up against Louisville, Memphis and Cincinnati this season, though. Those are the Huskies’ biggest challengers in the conference, but the competition level will be no different than what the Big East was last season. In fact, it will likely be easier.
Kevin Ollie’s team is definitely a contender in the AAC and it would not be a surprise if the team ended up winning the conference title. Louisville is not a given to win the conference just because it won the national championship last year.
