The Arizona Wildcats are ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but how can they earn the top ranking in college basketball?

The easiest way for that to happen is for the other four teams in front of them to lose.

However, the Wildcats can also achieve that feat by beating Michigan on Dec. 14. It is important to note that Arizona will take on San Diego State and UNLV before the matchup with the Wolverines. Plus, Arizona will be playing in the NIT Season Tip-Off in late November. If the Wildcats can go undefeated up until the NIT Season Tip-Off, they could earn the No. 1 ranking by winning that tourney.

A Duke-Arizona matchup is very likely to happen in the NIT. Duke is ranked No. 4 in the nation and the winner of that contest–if it happens–will have a huge win on the resume.

Kentucky may be the No. 1 team in the country entering the year, but there are plenty of other teams that will challenge it for a national title. Many of the top teams in college hoops will have to play each other or will have pretty challenging non-conference schedules. Therefore, some of the teams in the top 10 will lose and the rankings will probably change on a weekly basis.

It’s certainly not impossible, but going undefeated this season will be a very tough task.

Arizona is one of the most talented teams in the nation. It can earn the No. 1 ranking if it wins its games, but that will be easier said than done.
