The Virginia Cavaliers are ranked in both major polls, but with a loss they would easily be booted out of both. However, the team can show their worth with a win over the VCU Rams on Nov. 12.
VCU is a great basketball team and is ranked as high as No. 14. The Rams could easily climb into the top 10 with a win over Virginia.
The Cavaliers are the last ranked ACC team in the top 25, yet a lot of people are predicting them to finish in second place in the ACC. That does not seem right to me.
Virginia could have one of the best defenses in the nation this year. That alone should have it higher in the rankings. The team returns many players from last year and it also adds a couple of transfers.
The Cavaliers finished with an overall record of 23-12 last season and an ACC record of 11-7. Both were solid, but they still did not make the dance. Beating VCU would add a big win to the resume right off of the bat and it would also give this team some serious bragging rights. Moving up in the rankings would also be nice.
The Rams could have their best team yet, though, so it will not be easy. Like Virginia, VCU returns a bunch of players from last year’s team.
Both teams should have no problem making the NCAA tournament, but it is Virginia who could really show its worth by winning that contest. The Cavaliers may be the lower ranked team, but that would not be an upset in my book.
