Marquette Golden Eagles: Overrated or Underrated Entering 2013-14 Season?

The Marquette Golden Eagles are the only team ranked in the Big East entering the 2013-14 college basketball season. Are they overrated or underrated coming in?

I am not so sure if Marquette should be the only ranked team entering the year, but apparently that is what the two major polls think. Are the Golden Eagles the best team in the conference entering the season? I have no clue. We can speculate all we want on who will win this conference, but there are virtually five teams with enough talent to do so.

St. John’s has the most talent in the conference. That is kind of hard to argue when it returns all of its key players, while many of the other teams in the Big East will be doing the exact opposite.

I will agree with this: Marquette could win a conference title this year and it should also be ranked. However, the same thing can be said about Creighton, St. John’s, Georgetown and Villanova.

The Golden Eagles are not better than any of those teams entering the season. If Vander Blue would have returned, then sure.

So, I guess I am saying they are overrated in the sense that other teams in the Big East should have been ranked as well. At the same time, Marquette could be the best team in the conference. It is way too early to tell. The Big East is going to play competitive as always, and there probably will not be any team who will separate itself from the pack.

From a national standpoint, though, the Golden Eagles are easily one of the top 30 teams in the country entering the year and they should have no problem making the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
