NCAA Basketball Maryland Terrapins

When Will Maryland Terrapins’ Nick Faust Learn To Play Under Control?

Anthony Gruppuso- USA TODAY Sports

Maryland Terrapins shooting guard Nick Faust has been quite the frustrating player from the outside looking in. He has all the tools to take over a game, but his lack of awareness at times over the course of a game is problematic for someone who is in his junior year.

In the late stages of the game this past Friday in the Terps’ loss against the Connecticut Huskies, the Terps were well on their way to taking the lead late in the second half until Faust decided to crash into the lane in the middle of multiple defenders and throw up a layup which he missed. This is a problem, and it better not continue over the course of the season.

Faust did contribute 17 points against the Huskies, but that was on 27 percent shooting. The Terps are looking at another NIT appearance if that is going to be the percentage Faust circles around over the course of this season.

As good as he is at times, Faust is also sometimes a momentum killer. The Terps can be in control of the game when Faust is wide open for a three-point jumper and he misses. That miss leads to a fast break for the opponent and the Terrapins are searching for answers once again trying to gain their momentum back on the court.

I don’t know if Faust is playing to improve his draft stock for the NBA or what. But if that is the case, clearly he isn’t ready to make that next jump.

I hope Faust gets better, but when you see him make the same mistakes he made in his freshman year it is a problem.
