The South Carolina Gamecocks have proven that they are the real deal in the 2013-14 college basketball season. Picked to finish 12th in the SEC, they nearly upset the No. 25 Baylor Bears behind the impressive play of their young, talented squad.

Sindarius Thornwell, along with fellow freshman Demetrius Henry and Tyrone Johnson, played an outstanding game for such young and underrated players. Sophomores Laimonas Chatkevicius, Michael Carrera and Mindaugas Kacinas completely out-hustled the Bears throughout the game.

On top of that, the Gamecocks got great support from senior Brenton Williams. Williams must continue to play well because he may be the key veteran against more difficult opponents later in the season.

Frank Martin has taken this team to new heights. Don’t forget that Martin coached in the Big 12 with the Kansas State Wildcats through a few highly-ranked seasons. He’s very familiar with the way that teams like Baylor play, and now that he has had a season coaching in the SEC under his belt, South Carolina’s SEC opponents should be worried.

If South Carolina’s young players can continue to have impressive games, the Gamecocks are going to be extremely dangerous all season long. The next big game for South Carolina is against another Big 12 team, the No. 8 Oklahoma State Cowboys. Marcus Smart and the Cowboys should watch out for this young, confident team, because they have upsets on the horizon.
