The Florida Gators beat the Southern University Jaguars 67 – 53 in a game that saw three players score at least 10 points and three other players scored at least eight. Although this win will be a confidence booster for Billy Donovan’s squad, it still raises some alarming concerns about who will step up and be the lead scorer for the Gators.
Having multiple players consistently score in double digits is great and all, but if they can’t back it up with defense, Florida is going to have a bad season. I know how crazy it must sound to say that the Gators will be unsuccessful if they have multiple players averaging at least 10 points game, but the Missouri Tigers had six players averaging double figures last season and still got knocked out of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in the first round by a strong defensive team.
In order to be a top team in college basketball, there has to be a player on your team that can match the scoring of players like Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins and other top NCAA players. Someone must step up for Florida and prove that they can be the go to scorer in late game come from behind games against talent heavy opposition.
Florida should have beaten Southern University into the ground, not let the Jaguars out score them in the second half. The Gators must find a player capable of scoring 20+ points every game or their National Championship hopes are going to be just that – hopes.
