South Florida Bulls Basketball: Season Depends on Anthony Collins

In South Florida‘s 65-60 loss to Detroit, junior point guard Anthony Collins had five points, two rebounds, four assists and four turnovers in 26 minutes. Coming back from an injury is tough, especially in basketball, because of the up-tempo nature of the game, but Collins is what makes this team go. He is the catalyst of the team’s offense and is a stingy defender. Well, maybe I should replace “is” with “was”.

In his four games since returning from injury, Collins has not seen a huge drop-off in minutes, averaging a substantial 28.5 minutes per contest. However, he is averaging only 7.5 points and five assists per game. His assist-to-turnover ratio is 20-17, which is not indicative of Collins’ play in past seasons. Those numbers suggest he may be forcing things on offense.

His confidence shooting the ball also has seemed to take a hit. In 114 minutes, he has only taken 18 shots and only made seven field goals, good for 38.9 percent.

South Florida’s loss to Detroit was a bad one. To put it into perspective, Connecticut defeated Detroit 101-55 a few weeks ago. The Bulls have to get their act together before American Athletic Conference play starts at the end of the month, and it all starts with Collins.

Through his first two seasons, Collins has averaged 8.8 points, 5.8 assists and has a career 355-187 assist-to-turnover ratio. Those are some impressive numbers for the point guard who has started since his first game during his freshman season. Let’s see if he can begin to improve and progress this season. If so, South Florida can be a team to look out for in March.

South Florida takes on George Mason on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
