Coming into the season, I figured the St. John’s Red Storm would be one of the best teams in the Big East. I also figured they would be ranked in the top 25 by now. Well, conference play has not started yet and the Red Storm are far from a ranked team. With that in mind, are they for real this season?

Until this team can actually win a big game, who knows. St. John’s has lost its two biggest tests of the season so far. It played Wisconsin and Syracuse very tough, but a loss is a loss.

Steve Lavin‘s team is very talented, but talent means nothing if you cannot win the big games.

Teams like Marquette–the preseason favorite by many to win the Big East–and Creighton have disappointed so far. Villanova is the only team that has completely exceeded expectations and is actually the only team ranked in the top 25–currently No. 8.

The Wildcats will enter conference play as the team to beat, but the conference is wide open after that.

St. John’s has looked pretty good at times and it is one of the best teams in the Big East on paper. It just needs to put it all together and it will be worthy of an NCAA tournament bid in no time.

In terms of being the real deal, St. John’s is an NCAA tournament team and that is it–at least right now. It has the talent to make a Sweet 16–or further–run, but it has to win the big games and compete in conference play first.
