The Butler Bulldogs lost a bunch of talent in the offseason. They even lost their head coach. Regardless, they still have a solid record. Butler will play Villanova in its first game in the Big East and a win would show that it is the real deal.
Villanova just lost its first game of the season to the Syracuse Orange. The Wildcats still managed to beat Kansas and Iowa in their non-conference schedule. They have a record of 11-1 and were ranked No. 8 in the country for a reason.
Butler hasn’t had the toughest schedule by any means, but it has been challenged. Its two losses came against Oklahoma State and LSU. Its biggest wins on the season have come against Washington State, Vanderbilt and Purdue. None of those teams were ranked, but it is not like the Bulldogs are that close to being ranked either.
A win against Villanova would change that, though. It is interesting to note that Butler played the Cowboys and Tigers very close. It lost by two points against Oklahoma State and it lost by two points against LSU in overtime.
Brad Stevens may not be the head coach anymore, but maybe Butler still has some magic left in it.
Beating Villanova will not be easy by any means, but the Bulldogs cannot be counted out of this game. Four points separates them from an undefeated season and a two-loss season.
It really helps that the game will be played at home for Butler, so you never know. Villanova is ranked in the top 10–at least right now–and it will easily be the favorite in this game. On that note, it is time to see if the Bulldogs are the real deal.
