Are Kansas Jayhawks Still the Favorites to Win Big 12?

Kansas

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas Jayhawks had very high expectations entering the year thanks to Andrew Wiggins joining the team. Well, the team already has three losses and is ranked outside of the top 10. Are they still the favorites to win the Big 12?

I would have to say no at this point. Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma State are all ranked higher than the Jayhawks. Rankings don’t really mean anything more than bragging rights, but Kansas simply is not the best team in the conference right now.

Iowa State and Oklahoma State have both been better. Not to mention, the Cowboys should have been the team to beat entering the season anyways.

That does not mean that Kansas won’t be the favorite at some point, though. This team is clearly very talented and I am sure the freshmen, especially Wiggins, will get better and better as the season progresses.

This is a very young team. Not every amazing recruiting class is going to come in and dominate college hoops like Anthony Davis and the rest of the Kentucky Wildcats did in the 2011-12 season. That team was one of the best of all time and it did have a couple of returning players.

I am sure many people will still say that the Jayhawks are the team to beat in the conference, but it really should not be that way until they actually beat teams like Oklahoma State and Iowa State.

Kansas has three losses on the season already. Those three losses may have come to great basketball teams, but a loss is a loss.
