North Carolina Should Be Worrying About Making the Tournament At This Point
The North Carolina Tar Heels have beaten Louisville, Kentucky and Michigan State–top three teams in the preseason poll. Unfortunately, it has also lost to five unranked opponents, with Miami being the latest one. Well, the Tar Heels should be worrying about making the NCAA tournament at this point.
North Carolina is 0-2 in the ACC. It’s not like it played Duke and Syracuse right off the bat either. Instead, it played Wake Forest and Miami. No offense to either one, but the Tar Heels should not be losing to teams of their quality when they have beaten some of the most talented teams in college hoops.
This is one of the most unpredictable teams you will see. Not just this year, but any year. Knowing this North Carolina team, it will beat the Orange next. Syracuse is ranked No. 2 in the nation and is perfect on the season. To make matters even worse, Roy Williams‘ team will play that contest on the road.
Starting off conference play with two losses is never a good thing, but the Tar Heels could very easily start off ACC play by going 0-3. If that is the case, they may be in danger of making the dance and the season still has a ways to go.
The ACC has a lot of depth this year, which means it is going to get its fair share of teams into the tourney. North Carolina is one of them as of right now. It does have three really big victories. However, if this team keeps on losing to unranked opponents and falls further down the conference standings, it is going to miss out on the Big Dance.
That is not easy to say considering its three big wins on the year already, but that is just the reality of things. With that said, the Tar Heels have not lost to a ranked opponent yet and they will be taking that 3-0 record into Syracuse’s house.
