Oklahoma State and Kansas were supposed to battle it out for a Big 12 title this year. Heck, even Baylor got some buzz entering the season. Iowa State and especially Kansas State, were afterthoughts when talking about competing for a Big 12 title. Well, both teams are in contention and both teams need a victory against one another to stay in that position.

Iowa State went undefeated 14 games into the season. It has lost three in a row ever since that amazing start. The Cyclones have lost to Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, so there is not a bad loss on their resume.

As for Kansas State, it started off conference play with a bang by knocking off the Cowboys. It is now 4-2 in the standings and Iowa State is 2-3.

The Jayhawks are still undefeated and are at the top of the conference standings with a 5-0 record.

If Iowa State loses, it could be out of the race for a Big 12 title. Sure, Kansas may already have four losses on the season, but it is playing extremely good basketball and has beaten four ranked opponents in a row.

One more loss would not doom Kansas State, but who knows if Kansas will even lose three games in the conference.

Conference play is not even halfway through, so a lot could happen now and until the end of the season. We are starting to get a pretty good idea of who the top dogs are in college hoops and the same thing can kind of be said about the Big 12. With that said, this is one of the most competitive conference in the nation and it has six teams ranked in the top 25 to prove it.

I am sure even Kansas will lose a game or two, but a loss could be detrimental to the loser of the Kansas State vs. Iowa State matchup.
