North Carolina State had a top 10 team entering last season. That team disappointed and then it disappointed some more. This year’s team did not have that high of expectations, but it still has a slim chance at making the 2014 NCAA Tournament and we are almost in the month of February.
The Wolfpack are 13-7 on the season and 3-4 in the ACC. Their best wins have come against Tennessee, Notre Dame, Maryland and Georgia Tech. Those victories are not going to get them into the dance, especially since they already have seven losses.
However, if North Carolina State can go on a little streak and somehow find a way to beat Syracuse or Pittsburgh on the road, an NCAA tournament appearance could be in the near future. This team has to get going, though. It has to finish with a winning record in the ACC and it cannot lose to the bottom teams in the conference standings.
Luckily for T.J. Warren and co., North Carolina State is on a two-game winning streak. It will play Florida State and North Carolina next. Victories in those games will put the Wolfpack on the bubble. Losses will probably result in them missing out on the Big Dance.
The ACC is one of the best conferences in the nation, so doing well in it will be very rewarding come March. Syracuse, Duke, Pittsburgh and Virginia are probably going to make the tourney. Two to three other teams could make it out of this conference as well. My guess is that it will be two and North Carolina State could be one of those teams if it plays good basketball from here on out. You could say that about many teams in this conference, though.
