When you look at the Memphis Tigers on paper, they look like one of the better teams in college basketball. They are No. 4 in assists and have wins over the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Louisville Cardinals, and their losses have come against teams with a 44 RPI or better. However, they just can’t seem to catch fire and string multiple wins together.
The Tigers took on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and absolutely dominated all of the court. Austin Nichols had 18 points, Chris Crawford had a double-double and Joe Jackson had eight assists as Memphis blew out the Scarlet Knights 101-69.
Memphis doesn’t lose to weak teams; it’s the upper half of the AAC that they struggle with. It’s a big win, but until they win consistently against top teams, they have to worry you moving forward. Luckily, they will have an opportunity to prove themselves as they play four more ranked opponents, but it’s uncertain if they have what it takes to win against them just because of their inconsistency.
One thing you can be certain of, however, is that the Tigers are going to be more than ready come tournament time. Memphis doesn’t look like a Final Four team on paper, but they have the talent and experience to pull off some major upsets. Do not sleep on the Tigers, because the American Athletic Conference is a lot more difficult than many people believe and will prepare Memphis to put up a fight in the Big Dance.
