College basketball might be the sport with the most parity year in and year out, but could this be the year a team goes undefeated throughout an entire season. The Syracuse Orange play in the conference that will probably get the most tournament bids. The team’s talent and basketball IQ outweigh the their flaws. Syracuse has six victories against the RPI top 50 and the team’s average margin of victory is close to 13. Syracuse has an RPI of four and an opponent strength of schedule of six, so who is going to bet against the Orange?
Syracuse took another step towards an undefeated season when the Orange dispatched the Clemson Tigers. While the win does not exactly jump off the screen, the Tigers are a respectable 15-7, and currently sit on the bubble. The Orange were led the general C.J. Fair who recorded 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory. Along with Fair’s impressive performance, Trevor Cooney and Jerami Grant combined for 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The win by the Orange sets up one of the biggest games of the year when Syracuse travels to play the Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday. The matchup marks a rematch of a thriller earlier in the season and presents the toughest test the rest of the way for the Orange.
If the Orange get by Pittsburgh, the team will go undefeated the rest of the regular season and through the tournament. The team is balanced and has capable shooters at every position. The Orange have one of the best players in the country in Fair and have arguably the best guard in the country at the position in Freshman Tyler Ennis. The talent on the floor along with hall of famer Jim Boeheim on the bench, the Orange are as deadly as ever.
The Orange will defeat Pittsburgh and go through the rest of the season unscathed which would mark a great accomplishment in one of the best conferences in college basketball. This year’s Syracuse team will become one of the best of all time as the Orange cut down the nets in Dallas in early April.
