Rant Sports Week 15 Official College Basketball Top 25 Rankings
Rant Sports Top 25 Rankings
Marcus Smart didn’t really shove that fan, right? That was just a dream? Unfortunately, THAT JUST HAPPENED. Smart and Oklahoma State could be in trouble the next three games. The Cowboys will also not be featured in the college basketball top 25 rankings for Week 15.
SMU will, though. According to ESPN.com, the Mustangs have not been ranked in the Top 25 since the 1984-85 season. I’m not a numbers guy, but that is a really long time ago.
The American Athletic Conference is proving to have some very good basketball teams and some of those teams could make runs in the 2014 NCAA tournament. For the time being, let’s just be happy for head coach Larry Brown and the SMU program.
The top five teams will not look any different and that can be expected since none of the top five teams lost.
Big Ten teams continue to beat up on one another and the same thing can be said in the Big 12. Speaking of the Big 12, Oklahoma State has now lost four games in a row and could be out of the race for the regular season conference title.
If you are like me, you thought the Cowboys were going to win the conference. They just need to start winning so they don’t miss out on the NCAA tournament which would be a major disappointment for such a talented team.
There will be some great matchups--as usual--in college hoops this week. Duke and North Carolina will continue their rivalry and Florida and Kentucky will battle it out in the SEC.
Read on to see this week’s rankings.
25. Connecticut Huskies (18-5, 6-4 AAC)
Connecticut may have lost to Cincinnati on Feb. 6, but the Bearcats are arguably the best team in the AAC and that game was played on the road for it. The Huskies got back on track by beating UCF.
Last Week: NR
24. Wisconsin Badgers (19-5, 6-5 Big Ten)
The Wisconsin Badgers are slowly playing their way back into the Big Ten title race. Plus, their win against Michigan State last game helps out with their tournament seed.
Last Week: NR
23. SMU Mustangs (19-5, 8-3 AAC)
SMU has now beaten Memphis and Cincinnati in its last two out of three games. That is an impressive feat for any team in college hoops and the Mustangs were awarded with a top 25 ranking.
Last Week: NR
22. Pittsburgh Panthers (20-4, 8-3 ACC)
Pittsburgh will take on Syracuse next and a win would help out the entire ACC. A loss would put the Panthers 3.5 games out of first place.
Last Week: 25
21. Iowa Hawkeyes (18-6, 7-4 Big Ten)
Iowa may have lost against Ohio State, but a victory against Michigan made up for that. Not to mention, the Hawkeyes beat the Wolverines by 18 points.
Last Week: 20
20. Memphis Tigers (18-5, 7-3 AAC)
Memphis’ win over Gonzaga may not help its cause in the AAC standings, but it will definitely help its cause when it comes to the NCAA tournament. Wins over ranked teams will do that every time.
Last Week: 22
19. Ohio State Buckeyes (19-5, 6-5 Big Ten)
Ohio State is on a three-game win steak and two of those wins were against top 25 teams. The Buckeyes will have Michigan next and a win would help out not only in the rankings, but the Big Ten standings as well.
Last Week: 23
18. Texas Longhorns (18-5, 7-3 Big 12)
Texas was bound to lose at some point and that loss came against a very good Kansas State team.
Last Week: 13
17. Virginia Cavaliers (19-5, 10-1 ACC)
Virginia is just a half game behind Syracuse in the ACC standings. A conference title is a real possibility for the Cavaliers.
Last Week: 18
16. Kentucky Wildcats (18-5, 8-2 SEC)
Kentucky will take on Auburn before the showdown against the Florida Gators on Feb. 15. A win in both would have the Wildcats back in the top 10.
Last Week: 17
15. Creighton Bluejays (19-4, 9-2 Big East)
Creighton’s loss against St. John’s knocked it out of first place in the Big East standings, but it will get Villanova on Feb. 16.
Last Week: 12
14. Iowa State Cyclones (18-5, 6-5 Big 12)
Iowa State was on a role and then it met up with West Virginia. The Mountaineers scored 102 points on the Cyclones. As I am sure you could have guessed, Iowa State lost that game.
Last Week: 14
13. Saint Louis Billikens (22-2, 9-0 A 10)
Saint Louis has not lost since Dec. 1, but it will have a very tough test in VCU next (Feb. 15). This was one of the most important Atlantic 10 matchups coming into the season and that is still the case as both teams are in the race for a conference title.
The Billikens are No. 1 in the standings and the Rams are two games back.
Last Week: 16
12. Michigan Wolverines (17-6, 9-2 Big Ten)
The Michigan Wolverines have now lost two out of their last three games. That would be okay if they didn’t have to play Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State in back-to-back-to-back games.
Last Week: 10
11. Louisville Cardinals (19-4, 8-2 AAC)
Louisville could control its own destiny in the AAC title. Is it in first place in the conference standings? No. However, the Cardinals are only two games back and still have to play Cincinnati, Memphis, SMU and Connecticut.
Last Week: 15
10. Michigan State Spartans (20-4, 9-2 Big Ten)
Michigan State has struggled as of late, but that is because it has been short-handed. A healthy Spartans team is still a top five team in college hoops.
Last Week: 9
9. Cincinnati Bearcats (22-3, 11-1 AAC)
Cincinnati’s loss to SMU was its first loss in the AAC and its first loss since Dec. 14.
Last Week: 7
8. Duke Blue Devils (19-5, 8-3 ACC)
Duke will battle it out with North Carolina next (Feb. 12). Need I say more?
Last Week: 11
7. Kansas Jayhawks (18-5, 9-1 Big 12)
Kansas has a two-game cushion in the Big 12 standings. However, that could change in a hurry as the Big 12 is one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball.
Last Week: 8
6. Villanova Wildcats (21-2, 9-1 Big East)
Villanova will play DePaul next, but the game everyone will be looking forward to is the contest against Creighton on Feb. 16. That game could determine who wins the Big East regular season title.
Last Week: 6
5. San Diego State Aztecs (21-1, 10-0 MW)
San Diego State may be undefeated and the team to beat in the MWC, but it still has to play New Mexico twice. The Lobos are only one game back in the standings.
Last Week: 5
4. Florida Gators (21-2, 10-0 SEC)
Florida will have a very tough two-game stretch against Tennessee and Kentucky. Both games will be played on the road for the Gators.
Last Week: 4
3. Wichita State Shockers (25-0, 12-0 MVC)
Wichita State has just six games left in the regular season and I am sure many people are rooting for it to win out so it can finish the season undefeated.
Last Week: 3
2. Arizona Wildcats (23-1, 10-1 Pac-12)
As good as Arizona has been all season long, it only has a 2.5 game lead over UCLA in the Pac-12 standings.
Last Week: 2
1. Syracuse Orange (23-0, 10-0 ACC)
Syracuse has the talent to finish the season undefeated, but I doubt that will be the case. The Orange still have to play road games against Pittsburgh, Duke and Virginia.
