It is almost that time of year. The edge-of-your-seat competition that takes place every year. I am referring to March Madness.

A tournament filled with Cinderellas, upsets, big teams, little teams, and so on. A total of 68 teams enter the tournament, but only one can come out on top as the best NCAA basketball team in 2014. The Final Four will take place in North Texas this year at AT&T Stadium. The home of the Dallas Cowboys will ring in a new champion when it is all said and done on April 7.

During the time leading up to March Madness, teams are a lock to get in because of their success. Some teams have to fight just to get into the tournament and others are out of luck or even get snubbed. One team that has been living dangerously this season is the North Carolina Tarheels. A program with a rich history, the Tarheels have had their Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moments this season. They have pulled upsets and have been upset themselves. It is a very interesting situation for the team because they have beaten teams that are ranked higher but have also lost against lower-tier teams.

So, where do the Tarheels fit in this mess? It is uncertain as of right now, but I believe that this team has made the right steps to get into the tournament. Their faith lies in the next couple games. But here are five reasons I believe North Carolina will be going to the big dance in March.

5. Conference

The Tarheels are in the ACC Conference. It is known as one of the better conferences in college basketball even to this day. It is one of the automatic qualifying conferences. As long as the Tarheels keep winning their conference games and make a run in the ACC Tournament, that should get them in.

4. North Carolina's RPI

The Tarheels have a RPI, or Rate Percentage Index, of 35. This marks them as one of the top 50 as far as their rank. This is determined by win-loss index and strength of schedule. The fact that they are in the top as far as the RPI, gives them a good chance of making the tournament.

3. Strength of Schedule

Continuing on from the last slide, their strength of schedule in the league is 20th, which means the Tarheels have had their fair share of challenging teams. The wins that they have over those teams will determine if they are worthy of playing basketball in March, and it sure looks that way.

2. Roy Williams

The legendary head coach of the Tarheels, Roy Williams is very knowledgeable and has led two different teams to the final four three times and has won the whole tournament twice. If the Tarheels get in the tournament, Williams is going to be a very tough out because that is when he is at his best.

1. Tournament Resume

Mike Carter- USA TODAY Sports

The biggest reason I believe that North Carolina will be dancing in the tournament will be their resume. It is quite impressive with wins over the Louisville Cardnials and previous No. 1 Michigan State Spartans. Even though they have some bad losses as well, I see the good outweighing it by a good amount. If they can keep adding on to it with huge wins, this team will be dancing. But with what they have put on it so far will be enough.
