Bubble Watch: 5 Reasons Why the Sun Devils Will Make the Tournament
The Arizona State Sun Devils got in the national spotlight by knocking off UNLV (on the road) and No. 25 Marquette (at the time) early on in the season. Since their 6-0 start, they have been considered an NCAA tournament team and I will be giving you five reasons why they will make the tourney.
Arizona State lost its first game of the season against Creighton. It didn’t just lose, though, it got blown out by 28 points.
The team then lost two games later against a Miami team that has no shot at making the Big Dance. Well, I guess the Hurricanes could win the ACC tournament, but I wouldn’t count on that.
Still, the Sun Devils entered Pac-12 play as a dark horse to win the conference title. A loss against Washington to start off conference play did not help with that.
At one point Arizona State was 2-3 in the conference, but it has gotten back on track and is now 8-4. The team is now riding a three-game win streak which includes a victory against the Arizona Wildcats. May I remind you that Arizona has only lost two times all season long.
There are many bubble teams in the Pac-12. Arizona is a lock and UCLA is getting close to that. Arizona State is not too far behind and there is a list of other teams that will be battling it out for a tournament bid.
Well, read on to see five reasons why Arizona State will make the 2014 NCAA tournament.
Still Has a Slim Chance to Win Pac-12
Arizona State is two games out of first place in the Pac-12 standings with six games remaining. It will more than likely have to win out and hope that Arizona can get upset two more times, but it still has a slim chance of winning the regular season conference title.
RPI and BPI
According to ESPN, Arizona State has a RPI ranking of 29 and a BPI ranking of 32. These kinds of rankings don’t mean everything, but they could certainly help out a team like the Sun Devils when it comes to making the tourney.
Resume is Way too Good to Not Make the Dance
Arizona State has beaten UNLV, Marquette, Utah, Colorado, California, Oregon and Arizona on the year. This team is tournament tested and the recent victory against the Wildcats shows that it can take on anyone in college basketball.
The Sun Devils’ only bad loss came against Miami earlier in the season. That is it.
The team is 19-6 overall and 8-4 in the Pac-12. Their resume is very hard to deny and there is really no reason why the Sun Devils should not make the dance based off of that alone.
Who Doesn’t Want to See Jahii Carson in the Tourney?
Jahii Carson is one of the best players in the county. He is averaging 18.9 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game and 4.8 assists per game. May I remind you that he stands at 5-foot-10.
Who doesn’t want to see Carson playing in the dance? He would become even more of a star and would be an exciting watch every single time Arizona State takes the court.
One of Two Teams to Beat Arizona
There are only two teams who have beaten Arizona this year and the Sun Devils are one of them. California is the other team and it also could make a great case for the dance.
The Wildcats have beaten the likes of San Diego State, Duke, Michigan and many others. As a result, Arizona State’s win over one of the top teams in the country shows how talented it really is.
Not to mention, the Sun Devils were able to edge out Arizona after two overtimes.
