The Wichita State Shockers are leaving Evansville with their perfect record still intact. Despite a late rally that saw the Shockers’ lead slip from double digits to only five, they would regain the momentum and finish off the evening with a 84-68 victory.
The No. 4 ranked Shockers improved to 27-0 behind the sophomore backcourt duo of Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet. Baker set a career high with 26 points, including the final nine for Wichita State that helped put an end to any chance of an upset by the Aces.
Fellow backcourt mate Van Vleet had 18 points of his own to go along with eight dimes and an impressive five steals.
Wichita State has continued to avoid any setbacks for 27 straight games now, and that’s never an easy task. Each Missouri Valley team is bringing their absolute best every night, hoping to be known as the team that brought down an undefeated squad.
Instances like tonight show the poise that the Shockers possess. With the game beginning to slip away on the road and the pressure starting to build, Wichita State didn’t lose a bit of confidence as they hit several huge three-point daggers to keep their lead comfortable.
With the loss by Arizona on Saturday, the Shockers should climb up in the polls after being stuck at No. 4 for a few weeks. The team is back in action on Wednesday against Loyola (IL).
Wichita State is only four regular season wins away from perfection, and it doesn’t appear that any of their opponents will be serious threats.
