Rant Sports Week 16 Official College Basketball Top 25 Rankings
Top 25 Rankings
Syracuse is still undefeated, Florida could be the best team in the country, Arizona went down again and so did many other teams in the top 10. This is the time of year that is known as bubble season. As a result, the top 25 is going to probably look a lot different every single week, but that is probably always the case this time of the year.
Bubble teams, wannabe bubble teams and really every other team is trying to win every single game possible right now. Bubble teams are trying to make their case for the dance and teams already in the tournament--well, teams that will more than likely be in the tournament--are trying to increase their seed.
Here is one thing that is not going to help those bubble teams and the ones trying to earn a higher seed: Losing.
Selection Sunday is oh-so-very-close and I am sure every college basketball fan is having dreams about filling out a perfect bracket. Maybe that is just me.
There are still many conferences that are undecided and will probably remain that way until the final week of the season. I am looking right at you Big Ten.
One conference that may have been decided this past week is the SEC. Florida finally beat Kentucky on the road and now holds a three-game lead in the conference standings. The Gators only have six games left in the regular season and I doubt that they lose three more games. Stranger things have happened, though.
For example, Butler made the national championship two seasons in a row just a couple of years ago.
Well, it is a great time to be a college basketball fan. Get ready for this upcoming week in college hoops by seeing the top 25 rankings for Week 16.
25. Ohio State Buckeyes (20-6, 7-6 Big Ten)
The Big Ten continues to be brutal to even the best teams in the conference. Ohio State saw that once again when it took on Michigan at home--lost by 10.
Last Week: 19
24. Memphis Tigers (19-6, 8-4 AAC)
Memphis could have really used a victory on the road against Connecticut. The Tigers are now 3.5 games out of first place in the conference standings and winning the regular season title is probably not going to happen.
Last Week: 20
23. UCLA Bruins (20-5, 9-3 Pac-12)
UCLA is No. 2 in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins are now only one game behind Arizona.
Last Week: NR
22. Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-4, 13-1 WCC)
The Gonzaga Bulldogs enter the rankings once again. However, their last four games of the regular season will be played on the road.
Last Week: NR
21. Connecticut Huskies (20-5, 8-4 AAC)
Connecticut has now beaten Memphis twice on the season which should bode well with the tournament committee.
Last Week: 25
20. Kentucky Wildcats (19-6, 9-3 SEC)
Kentucky is a very, very talented team. The Wildcats just aren’t as good as we thought they would be. Still, they are more than capable of making a run in March.
Last Week: 16
19. Michigan Wolverines (18-7, 10-3 Big Ten)
Michigan has now lost three games in its last five. Still, the Wolverines are tied at the top of the conference standings.
Last Week: 12
18. Iowa State Cyclones (19-5, 7-5 Big 12)
Losing on the road to West Virginia is not a bad thing. However, losing on the road to West Virginia by 25 points is.
Last Week: 14
17. Wisconsin Badgers (21-5, 8-5 Big Ten)
Wisconsin still has a chance to win the Big Ten. However, it will have to play Iowa next away from home.
Last Week: 24
16. Iowa Hawkeyes (19-6, 8-4 Big Ten)
Just like Wisconsin, Iowa still has a chance to win the Big Ten title. The Hawkeyes are only 1.5 games out of first place.
Last Week: 21
15. Michigan State Spartans (21-5, 10-3 Big Ten)
Michigan State has been on the lose-one, win-one trend for the past seven games. The Spartans desperately need to be at full strength come NCAA tournament time.
Last Week: 10
14. Texas Longhorns (20-5, 9-3 Big 12)
I understand that Texas doesn’t have the most appealing non-conference schedule resume, even though it only lost two games, but it has been great in Big 12 play. The Longhorns are only one game behind Kansas.
Last Week: 18
13. Virginia Cavaliers (21-5, 12-1 ACC)
Virginia has now won nine games in a row in the ACC. The Cavaliers could be a very dangerous team come NCAA tournament time.
Last Week: 17
12. Villanova Wildcats (22-3, 10-2 Big East)
The Villanova Wildcats have a very solid resume. They just better hope that they don’t have to meet up with Creighton in the Big Dance--doubt they will. Villanova has played the Bluejays twice and they have lost both games by a combined 49 points.
Last Week: 6
11. Saint Louis Billikens (23-2, 10-0 A 10)
With a victory over VCU, the Saint Louis Billikens now have a 2.5 game padding in the Atlantic 10 standings.
Last Week: 13
10. Creighton Bluejays (21-4, 11-2 Big East)
Doug McDermott is averaging 32.2 points per game in his last five contests. The Bluejay is unstoppable on the offensive side of the ball and he will more than likely put on one heck of a show in the dance.
Last Week: 15
9. Louisville Cardinals (21-4, 10-2 AAC)
Louisville has a very tough stretch to end the regular season and that stretch is going to be very telling.
Last Week: 11
8. San Diego State Aztecs (22-2, 11-1 MW)
The loss to Wyoming was a little unexpected, but the Aztecs were able to beat Air Force the very next game. The key to winning the conference title will be beating New Mexico.
Last Week: 5
7. Kansas Jayhawks (19-6, 10-2 Big 12)
Kansas still holds a one-game lead in the Big 12, but it also still has to play Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Last Week: 7
6. Cincinnati Bearcats (23-3, 12-1 AAC)
Win or lose, playing Louisville, Connecticut and Memphis down the stretch should have Cincinnati more than ready for the AAC tournament and the dance.
Last Week: 9
5. Duke Blue Devils (20-5, 9-3 ACC)
Duke will more than likely not win the ACC, but finishing the rest of the season perfect could lead to an ACC tournament title.
Last Week: 8
4. Arizona Wildcats (23-2, 10-2 Pac-12)
Arizona has lost two games in its last four. However, California and Arizona State could still make the tourney and the Wildcats were bound to lose to someone in this very tough conference.
Last Week: 2
3. Florida Gators (23-2, 12-0 SEC)
Florida passed its biggest SEC test of the season by beating Kentucky on the road, and going perfect in conference play could be in store now.
Last Week: 4
2. Wichita State Shockers (27-0, 14-0 MVC)
Wichita State is No. 2 for the simple fact that it is still undefeated. However, the Gators are playing amazing basketball right now and could jump the Shockers very soon.
Last Week: 3
1. Syracuse Orange (25-0, 12-0 ACC)
Feb. 22. That is the day Syracuse travels on the road to play the Duke Blue Devils. That is also the day that the Orange will be handed their first loss of the season.
