5 Things SMU Basketball Must Do to Make the 2014 NCAA Tournament

a
USA TODAY Sports- Howard Smith

Larry Brown has something cooking with the SMU Mustangs, and it did not take long for the wily former coach of Allen Iverson to start building something special. The commitment of elite point guard Emmanuel Mudiay signaled a sea change, and it would not shock me to one day see the Mustangs in the Final Four. That is all contingent on Brown still being the coach of course.

Can they make it into the tournament field this season though?

Certainly the easiest way to get into the tournament would be to win the conference playoffs following the season, and the Mustangs are my pick to do that.

Barring that though, then they will probably have to win the rest of the games in their regular season, and even that would not guarantee the selection committee will punch their ticket. They routinely disrespect the smaller schools, but it is my hope that they will give the Mustangs a shot this season.

5. Beat the Connecticut Huskies

a
USA TODAY Sports- Jim Cowsert

A matchup with the Huskies looms on Sunday, and if the Mustangs can get another marquee win on their resume then it will certainly help their case. They also have match ups with the Louisville Cardinals and Memphis Tigers as well, so winning at least two of those will be crucial to their hopes.

4. Listen to Larry Brown

a
USA TODAY Sports- Jim Cowsert

They are lucky enough to have a Hall of Famer at head coach, and so the young guns would be wise to listen to what he has to say. It will be a tough road if they lose on Sunday night, but they appear to be playing well as of late so a win would not shock me.

3. Put Emmanuel Mudiay Out There

USA TODAY Sports- Howard Smith

Okay, this slide is partly a joke; the Mustangs probably wish they could put blue-chip commit Emmanuel Mudiay out there this season, but they will have to be content with him watching from the stands for now. His commitment, though, is a sign of great things to come.

2. Rely On Veterans

Their seniors will need to supply a helping hand if the Mustangs are going to get this done, so look for coach Brown to lean heavily on his upperclassmen as the season progresses. How they finish the regular season against the Tigers will be especially crucial, because playoff seeding will be determined by the game.

1. Win Conference Playoffs

a
USA TODAY Sports- Howard Smith

This is the only sure-fire way for them to achieve their dreams, but it is certainly within their ability. Count me among the viewers of the conference playoff finals to be sure. Thanks for stopping by, and stay warm out there Chi-town.

Idtiotic post…they don’t have to win the rest of the games..they have already won against 3 top 25 teams. If they win against one more top 25 it’s guaranteed. Even that is not needed if they don’t lose against another unranked team. That and their wins against top 25 teams would put them safely in top 60s Actually they are projected as number 10 seed out of 16 rignt now with their current record…so u see how idioitic, way off u r…SMH!
