5 Things BYU Basketball Must Do to Make the 2014 NCAA Tournament

a
USA TODAY Sports- Ed Szczepanski

The BYU Cougars do not have Jimmer Fredette on the team this year (which is a shame), but they still have March Madness hopes and these are five things that would certainly help their case.

The field will certainly be tough to choose this season, and do not envy the task of selecting the teams. That will not stop me from criticizing the selections though, because that is just what my brain is designed to do. Every year they make some mistakes, but it is a tough job that I would not wish upon anyone and especially myself. Basketball has been on the brain lately, because recently played with an old classmate and had quite a fun time trading three pointers and hook shots on Friday.

The Jimmer years were certainly the high water mark for Cougars basketball, and honestly wish that team had made a longer run in the tournament. Alas, it did not happen, so we will just have to hop for this year's squad to go on a miracle run. It will certainly be fun to keep track of either way, and will be rooting for the Cougars as the year ends.

5. Stay Focused on Achievable Tasks

Let's be real. Their record at this point speaks for itself, and there is not much else that is within their control. Those things within their control though are what they need to truly focus on, and so expect the Cougars to come out super focused to end the year.

4. Win Out the Regular Season

Their regular season only has a couple games left, but winning them would go a long way towards making the March Madness field. That might be asking a lot, but when you play in a smaller conference then you have to be willing to prove yourself against the best.

3. Play Competitively in Conference Tournament

Obviously, if they win their conference playoffs, then they will get an automatic selection to March Madness. At the very least though, they really need to win at least one or two games to show that their selection is worthy over other capable teams.

2. Have Legitimate Fan Support

Joseph Smith might not be able to help you out on this one, but if the BYU faithful can come out and support their team then it might end up making a difference in some of the road games that will come.

1. Seriously, Can't We Get Jimmer Back Out There

a

Apologies that I cannot drop this one, but the Jimmer years at BYU were just absolutely crazy and cannot help thinking how much he could help this year's squad. Thanks as always for putting up with my buffoonery, and come back tomorrow if the muse strikes.
