The Bachynski brothers are both putting together nice seasons. The younger of the two, Dallin Bachynski, plays for the Utah Utes while his older brother, Jordan Bachynski, has been playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils for the past four years. Dallin, a junior from Canada, helped his Utes beat his older brother’s Sun Devils.
After a huge 32-11 start to the game, the Utes took over at home. The Bachynski brothers might not have dominated the game, but the fact that it was a parent’s worst nightmare where their kids play against each other has to mean something. At the half, the Bachynski parents were feeling for the older brother, who had his Sun Devils in foul trouble and down 51-26.
The Bachynski brothers aren’t known for their offensive acumen, but rather their defensive composure. Jahii Carson, the Sun Devils’ star point guard, had two points throughout the first half as Dallin Bachynski had two of the team’s six blocks in the first half. Carson, who averages almost 19 points per game, struggled early and his frustration led to early foul trouble. He finished with just eight points as he battled foul trouble all night in one of his worst performances of the season.
The blowout win over the Sun Devils asserted the Utes’ dominance at home in conference play. If they can somehow get a conference win on the road (where they are 1-6 with the lone win coming against the USC Trojans), they would be in the tournament. However, since they struggled on the road as most young teams do in college basketball, they will have to look elsewhere for a end-of-season tournament.
The blowout win over the Sun Devils improved the Utes’ Pac-12 record to 7-8. It was certainly an impressive showing for the Utes. They smothered the Sun Devils’ star guard, went after their defensive anchor Bachysnki, and forced them to shoot at a putrid 30 percent from the field.
The Utes got their energy from the home court and dominated the Sun Devils in the battle for superiority between brothers. Dallin finished with six rebounds, two points and two blocked shots whereas Jordan finished with six rebounds, three blocks and also tallied five points. The Utes won 86-63, dominating the whole way.
