5 Things Ole Miss Basketball Must Do to Make NCAA Tournament
The Ole Miss Rebels have one of the most exciting players to watch in college basketball. His name is Marshall Henderson. Well, him and the rest of the Rebels have a lot of things they need to do in order to make the 2014 NCAA tournament. I will be giving you five.
Ole Miss is 17-11 overall and 8-7 in the SEC. In no way does it have an impressive out-of-conference resume, but it did play Oregon and Kansas State very close. The Rebels did beat Middle Tennessee State, though.
What really put this team on the bubble was a four-game losing streak. Now, the Rebels must play their way back into the bubble conversation, but all hope is not lost. This is a team that did win the SEC tournament last season.
Unfortunately, they may have to do that again if they plan on dancing. We will get to that later.
Wins against LSU and Missouri look nice. Victories against Florida and Kentucky would have been a whole lot better, but that sadly did not happen for this team.
Ole Miss may be tied for fourth place in the SEC, but they have so much work to do. Marshall Henderson and Jarvis Summers have been great this season and both players are really going to have to step up in the Rebels’ last three games and in the SEC tournament.
Well, let’s take a look at five things Ole Miss basketball must do to make the tournament.
Win Last Three Games of the Season
Ole Miss cannot afford to lose anymore. It closes out the season against Texas A&M, Arkansas and Vanderbilt. Easier said than done, but the Rebels have to win all three of those games.
Blow Out Some Teams
Not many people would be impressed if Ole Miss won its last three games of the season. It does not play a single ranked opponent in any of those contests.
However, blowing out one of those teams may get the Rebels some attention. Blowing out all three would get this team back on the radar.
Beat Florida or Kentucky in the SEC Tournament
The SEC is underrated. Many people think it is nothing more than a top-heavy conference, but I completely disagree.
Unfortunately, what I think does not matter right now.
As a result of many people thinking the SEC is top-heavy, Ole Miss needs to beat Florida or Kentucky in the SEC tournament. Beating both -- assuming they play both -- would be huge.
Beat Other Bubble Teams in the SEC Tourney
Beating other bubble teams is so important this time of the year. Yes, beating a team like Florida or Kentucky would be huge for Ole Miss, but beating teams like Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri or LSU could be just as important.
Win the SEC Tournament
Even if this basketball team does the four things I mentioned earlier, there is still no guarantee that it makes the tourney.
Ole Miss is not an NCAA tournament team as of right now. It has so much work to do and it may need to win the SEC tournament. The Rebels did it last year, so who is to say they cannot do it this year.
Earning that automatic bid is the only way Ole Miss will be guaranteed to hear its name on Selection Sunday.
