NCAA Tournament 2014: 10 Reasons Why Florida Will Win it All

Florida Gators NCAA tournament
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Florida Gators are good at basketball this year. They are so good that they could be considered the best team in college hoops and their No. 1 ranking would probably agree. Conference tournaments and all of that fun stuff still have to take place, but let’s take a look at 10 reasons why Florida will win the 2014 NCAA tournament.

No matter what happens now until the tourney, the Gators will still be considered one of the best teams and one of the favorites to win the dance. Their resume speaks for itself.

Billy Donovan’s team is currently 26-2 overall and 15-0 in the SEC. The Gators are on a 20-game win streak and have not lost since Dec. 2.

The two losses on the season have come against Wisconsin and Connecticut. Both games were played on the road for Florida and both teams were ranked in the top 25. I’m not trying to use any excuses for either loss, but Florida was short-handed in both games. Just saying.

Teams like Syracuse, Arizona, Wichita State, Kansas, Duke and so many others are going to get a lot of hype entering the tourney. They should. All of those teams are very talented and are more than capable of making a Final Four run.

There are many solid basketball teams this year and a number of different teams could end up winning the title.

However, Florida has arguably been the best team all season long and it will go on to win the NCAA tournament.

Read on to see 10 reasons why.

Secret Weapon

Chris Walker

The Florida Gators have a secret weapon. That secret weapon goes by the name of Chris Walker.

Does Walker get a lot of playing time? No. However, he has enough talent to go pro after this season if he decides to go that route. If someone goes down or if Donovan wants to throw opposing teams off guard, he can throw in his five-star recruit.

Three Straight Trips to the Elite Eight

Florida has made three straight trips to the Elite Eight. The scary thing is this team could be better than all three of those teams.

Scottie Wilbekin

There are a lot of great point guards in college hoops, but Scottie Wilbekin could be the best one. He is averaging 13.5 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game.

However, he is much better than those stats would suggest. He is a force on both ends of the court, clutch and arguably the best player on the Gators.

Complete Team

Florida Basketball
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Gators have everything a basketball team needs to be successful. They have an elite point guard in Wilbekin, a dominant big man in Patric Young, a scorer in Casey Prather, a three-point shooter in Michael Frazier II and “role” players in Dorian Finney-Smith, Will Yeguete and Kasey Hill.

This could be the most complete team in college basketball.

Senior Leadership

Florida has four seniors and all four play big minutes for the Gators. Scottie Wilbekin, Casey Prather, Patric Young and Will Yeguete have made three Elite Eights together and you better believe that they will be pushing their team to not only make it a fourth straight Elite Eight trip, but a national championship appearance as well.

Defense

Florida may not have the highest-scoring offense this year, but it is the defense that makes it so dominant. The Gators are allowing the fewest amount of points in the SEC and their defense is a nightmare for opposing teams.

Tournament Tested

Wisconsin, Connecticut, Kansas, Memphis and Kentucky. Florida has played all of those teams this year and they hold a 3-2 record against them.

As much as people like to bash on the SEC, it has a bunch of talent and the Gators have played many good teams in the conference. Other than the Wildcats, a couple of other teams could find their way into the dance.

Regardless, this is a team that has been challenged all season long.

Balanced Attack

Florida’s offense is not the most lethal in the country, but the Gators do have a balanced attack. Casey Prather leads the team with 14.8 points per game, but three other players are averaging in double figures, one player is scoring just under 10 per game and two more guys are putting up 5+ points per game.

Prather may be the leading scorer, but a number of players can go off.

Best Team in College Basketball

Florida Basketball
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Florida is the best team in college basketball. It has one of the best records, it has beaten teams like Kansas and Memphis, it is undefeated in the SEC and I could go on and on all day.

The Gators not only are considered the best team in the sport right now, but they have looked the part. Just watch a Florida basketball game and I am sure you will see what I am talking about.

No. 1 Team in the Country

Florida is ranked No. 1 in the country. That is no fluke. Wichita State is undefeated and the Gators are still the top team in college hoops.
