The Xavier Musketeers took on the No. 9 Creighton Blue Jays in a game that neither team would have deemed as must-win, but it would have helped Xavier, as they’ve recently been on the outside of the 2014 NCAA tournament bubble. The Musketeers didn’t disappoint, as they upset the Blue Jays 75-69.
Xavier’s Justin Martin went off for 16 rebounds and 19 points, as did Semaj Christion, who scored 21. Doug McDermott did what he normally does and was electric from the floor; he finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds as he tries to continue to convince the country that he deserves the Wooden award. However, McDermott was the only player that showed out for Creighton as Xavier got arguably their best win of the season.
Xavier will be relieved to have beaten the Blue Jays, because it takes a lot of pressure off of them as they face a weak Seton Hall team, as well as the No. 8 Villanova Wildcats, to finish out the regular season. Barring a collapse against Seton Hall, the Musketeers will be able to lose to Villanova without major tournament consequences. However, expect Xavier to compete against the Wildcats, because they are at home.
The Musketeers deserve to go to the 2014 NCAA tournament. They are an exciting team that legitimately has an opportunity to pull off major tournament upsets. The win against Creighton should boost them from the bubble to solidly in the 2014 NCAA tournament; don’t expect them to fall out of the bubble again.
