SEC Basketball: Auburn Tigers Halt Texas A&M’s NIT Bid With Win
It was already assumed that the Texas A&M Aggies would miss out on the 2014 NCAA tournament, because of a few close losses to teams like the SMU Mustangs, Missouri Tigers and Vanderbilt Commodores that would have put them on the tournament bubble. However, the Aggies still had a chance at a trip to the NIT if they could defeat the Auburn Tigers to finish out the SEC regular season and win a few games in the SEC tournament.
Unfortunately, the Aggies just couldn’t get it done against Auburn and fell 69-64. The Tigers’ Chris Denson and K.T. Harrell are some of the best shooters in the SEC and combined for 39 points against Texas A&M. Jamal Jones and Alex Caruso had good games for the Aggies, but the rest of the team just couldn’t rebound, as Auburn out-rebounded Texas A&M 35-25.
Despite losing their final game of the SEC regular season, Texas A&M shouldn’t be disappointed with what they’ve done. Picked by many to finish in the very bottom of the SEC, the Aggies proved their naysayers wrong with two wins over the Tennessee Volunteers, Arkansas Razorbacks, LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels; all teams expected to compete for a 2014 NCAA tournament berth.
The Aggies are going to be looking toward the future soon, but don’t count them out of a two- or three-win SEC tournament run. Texas A&M have been spoilers before; expect them to continue that role as the season ends in less than a week.
