With college basketball conference tournaments underway, the NCAA Tournament picture is about to become clearer. The SEC Tournament is set to tip off on Mar. 12. As with any conference tournament there are certain aspects to keep an eye on as you watch the games.

Billy Donovan

The Gators are favored to win the SEC Tournament, and the championship is on Sunday Mar. 16. Florida is slated to start the NCAA tournament in Orlando, meaning they would play on Thursday, just four days after the SEC Championship game.

Donovan believes teams with championship games on Sunday should not play until Friday of the NCAA tournament. Donovan is getting ahead of himself, and I don’t think he is right to gripe about this.

9. How Secure Is Tony Barbee’s Job?

Tony Barbee

Auburn is the No. 12 seed in the SEC tournament after going 14-15 (6-12 in the SEC). Head coach Barbee’s job security is tenuous at best. During Barbee’s tenure, there have been a number of dismissals and transfers, and the Tigers have gone 18-50.

Could a run in the SEC tournament help secure his job? I doubt a run by the Tigers and Barbee’s job security.

8. How Will South Carolina Gamecocks Respond When Frank Martin Returns?

Frank Martin

South Carolina head coach Frank Martin was suspended one game after his blow up and use of harsh language directed at guard Duane Notice during a loss to top-ranked Florida. Martin returns on Mar. 12 when the Gamecocks face Auburn in the SEC tournament.

Will Martin be fiery as always? And if he is, will the players respond favorably?

7. Is Kentucky Legitimate?

Kentucky

The Wildcats have a ton of freshman on their roster, led by Julius Randle. Kentucky was talked about preseason as a team that was destined to make a Final Four run based on their talent (on paper, anyway). Kentucky finished the regular season 22-9 (12-6 in the SEC) and is currently not ranked. With all of their talent, can they put a run together in the SEC and NCAA tournaments?

6. Can Julius Randle Carry Kentucky?

6. Can Julius Randle Carry Kentucky?

Julius Randle

If Kentucky is going to make a run in either tournament, will it be their start freshman forward carrying them? Randle averaged 15.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season. Kentucky does not play collectively, as a team. If they do make a deep run, they will need great individual performances. Can Randle provide that?

5. Will Florida Win the SEC Tournament?

5. Will Florida Win the SEC Tournament?

Florida

Florida finished the regular season 29-2 (18-0 in the SEC), and they are the clear favorite to win the SEC tournament. Clear favorites don’t always win, but my money would be on Florida. They just look better than every other team in the SEC, by far.

It will be interesting to see if Florida is looking ahead at the NCAA tournament, or if they will take the SEC tournament seriously. I think they will be all business.

4. Will Arkansas Receive An At Large Bid?

Arkansas

The Razorbacks are on the bubble to make the NCAA tournament. They are the No. 5 seed in the SEC tournament and will play the winner of the Auburn vs. South Carolina game. If Arkansas wins, they will play the four seed, Tennessee.

Exactly how far do the Razorbacks need to go to secure their ticket to the NCAA tournament?

3. Will Tennessee Receive An At Large Bid?

Tennessee

The Volunteers are on the bubble and are the four seed in the SEC tournament. They will play either Auburn (12 seed), South Carolina (13 seed) or Arkansas (5 seed) in the SEC tournament.

What do they need to do to secure an at large bid to the NCAA tournament?

2. Will Missouri Receive An At Large Bid?

Missouri

The Tigers are also on the bubble, and are the eight seed in the SEC tournament. They play Texas A&M (nine seed), and if they win, they will play Florida. Will a win against A&M be enough, or do the Tigers have to beat the Gators too?

It will be interesting to see what Missouri does in the SEC tournament, and how that affects their NCAA tournament status.

1. How Many SEC Teams Will Get Into the NCAA Tournament?

SEC Basketball

Kentucky and Florida are the only two teams that would definitely make it into the NCAA tournament outright if the bracket came out today; Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri are all on the bubble, and the SEC could potentially have five teams in the NCAA tournament.

My guess is that four make it, since there are only so many at large spots and someone’s bubble is bound to burst.
