North Texas Barely Survive Conference USA Basketball Opener in Overtime
It may not be one of the more hyped tournaments and the teams might not have as much talent as programs from bigger conferences, but the Conference USA tournament promises to be one of the more entertaining tournaments through championship week as teams have struggled to separate from the pack in the conference standings all season in a league filled with parity.
The opening round of the C-USA tournament did not disappoint as the tournament opener went to overtime in a game that pitted the No. 10 seed against the No. 15 seed. The North Texas Mean Green came away with win that keeps the team alive for an NCAA tournament berth, but can the Mean Green overcome the struggles the team has faced all season and ascend to new heights?
North Texas took the first step towards a conference title Tuesday when the Mean Green defeated the Rice Owls in a game that went down to the wire. North Texas was able to overcome a second-half deficit behind the stellar performances of Colin Voss and Jordan Williams. The dynamic duo combined for 27 points and 23 rebounds in the win that moves the Mean Green to the second round of the C-USA tournament.
The Mean Green will be looking to avenge an early season loss in the second round of the tournament as North Texas faces the Tulane Green Wave, a team that defeated the Mean Green 73-62 back in January. Could the double-digit seed be poised for an upset in the second round, or will the second meeting have a similar outcome to the first?
North Texas has tremendous depth which could be the key in knocking off the higher seeded Green Wave in a game that will most certainly go down to the wire.
