Villanova’s No. 1 Seed Hopes Dashed by Unlikely Buzzer-Beater
They say March is the craziest basketball month of the year. Heck, it might even be the craziest sports month of the year in terms of unpredictable upsets and last-second finishes. The Villanova Wildcats got to see just why March can be mad and it looks like their hopes for a No. 1 seed are now dashed thanks to a crazy buzzer-beater by the Seton Hall Pirates in the Big East Tournament.
Not many people gave the Seton Hall a chance seeing as it was .500 during the regular season overall and a lowly 6-12 in conference play. As the No. 8 seed in the conference heading into round two, the Pirates had very little chance to take down the No. 1 seed Wildcats. That was, until this happened:
Just before this buzzer beater was knocked down by the Pirates’ Sterling Gibbs, Villanova hit a shot that seemed to be the game winner at the time with just over seven seconds to play.
The No. 3-ranked Wildcats seem to have lost out on their chance to be a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and they will hope to be even a No. 2 seed. While a loss like this happens in March, it could still tear a team’s confidence apart and it could even drop the Wildcats to a No. 3 seed in the Big Dance.
Villanova has had a brilliant season, finishing with a 28-4 record, but it will take a great week of practice to help get the team’s confidence back after such an embarrassing loss.
If any coach can lead this team back to form, it’s Jay Wright.
