2014 NCAA Tournament Profile: Northeast Conference Champion Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers
Conference: Northeast Conference
How They Qualified: NEC Tournament Champions
Region: Play-in game for No. 16 seed in the South
Look at that record. That is why the NCAA tournament is so awesome. Literally any team can make the dance if it wins its conference tournament. There is no way the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers would have earned an at-large bid. They had to win the NEC. They were tied in fourth place in the NEC standings, so you can definitely say they stole a bid.
The Mountaineers beat the top two teams in the conference in the NEC tournament. Fluke wins or not, they beat two solid opponents when it mattered most.
What You Need to Know:
Leading Scorer: Rashad Whack (17.7 ppg)
Leading Rebounder: Gregory Graves (5.5 rpg)
Leading Passer: Julian Norfleet (5.4 apg)
Bad Losses: UMBC, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Binghamton, LIU Brooklyn
Good Wins: American, Wagner (twice), Robert Morris
Rashad Whack and Julian Norfleet both put up 17+ points per game. This solid scoring duo may have to put up even more points if Mount St. Mary’s is going to win a game in the dance.
This is clearly not one of the most talented teams in the tournament. The Mountaineers do not have a good record, but they won their conference tournament and that is really all that matters.
Mount St. Mary’s did beat Wagner and Robert Morris in back-to-back games to wrap up the conference tournament championship. No matter what conference a team plays for, it is always impressive when a team beats the top two teams in consecutive games.
The Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers are dancing!
