American U Basketball

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 20-12

RPI: 124

BPI: 137

Conference: Patriot League

How They Qualified: Patriot League Tournament Champions

Region: No. 15 seed in the West

Boston U might have won the Patriot League regular season title, but the American University Eagles won the conference tournament. As a result, the Eagles will be playing in the best tournament in sports and Boston U, well, it will be watching from home.

Although the Terriers were the favorites to earn the automatic bid, the Eagles beat them for the second time this season. Not to mention, it was a 19-point victory, so it is not like American U won the tournament with a buzzer beater or anything like that.

What You Need to Know:

Leading Scorer: Jesse Reed (13.9 ppg)

Leading Rebounder: Tony Wroblicky (7.3 rpg)

Leading Passer: Darius Gardner (4.2 apg)

Bad Losses: Loyola (MD), Colgate, Lafayette

Good Wins: Boston U (twice)

Beating the regular season champ was by far the best win for American this season. And, the Eagles managed to do that twice. They didn’t do a whole lot in conference play when it comes to beating quality opponents, but the Eagles did take on Ohio State. American lost that contest by 11 points.

Four players on this team are averaging 11+ points per game, but in no way does American score the basketball a lot (63.9 points per game).

This is a team that is going to have to rely on its defense to do anything in the dance. However, the offense has to come ready to play and has to put some points on the board.

The American University Eagles are dancing!
