2014 NCAA Tournament Profile: San Diego State Aztecs
Region – Seed: West – No. 4
Conference: Mountain West Conference
How They Qualified: At-Large Berth
San Diego State lost its two best players over the offseason. Apparently that meant nothing. The Aztecs are actually a much better team this year. They did go on a 20-game win streak and all. Not bad for a team that had a lot of questions entering the season. The only question now is how far the Aztecs could go in the 2014 NCAA tournament.
They weren’t exactly challenged as much as some of the other top seeds during conference play, but they did play Kansas, Arizona and Creighton on the year. Not to mention, San Diego State only lost to the Wildcats out of that bunch
What You Need to Know:
Leading Scorer: Xavier Thames (16.8 ppg)
Leading Rebounder: Josh Davis (9.7 rpg)
Leading Passer: Xavier Thames (3.2 apg)
Bad Losses: Wyoming
Good Wins: Creighton, Kansas, New Mexico
Xavier Thames only averaged 9.2 points per game last season. He is definitely taking more shots, but he also has become a much more efficient shooter. He did go from a 35.6 percent three-point shooter to a 38.7 percent shooter in just one year. The senior has definitely been making the most of this season and it will be interesting to see if he can come up big in the dance.
San Diego State may have played in a less competitive MWC this year, but finishing conference play with a 16-2 record is impressive no matter what conference a team plays in. You can say the same thing about that 29-4 record.
The San Diego State Aztecs are dancing!
