Each year, there are teams that have the potential to lose very early or make a Final Four run. These are the teams that will ruin your bracket.
The Dayton Flyers will play in-state foe Ohio State Buckeyes in the “second round.” And while some may dismiss the Flyers, this is a team that has the potential to be a double-digit seed that makes the Sweet 16.
The good: Dayton’s offense might be able to crack the stingy Ohio State defense. Dayton has four players averaging at least 9.5 PPG and doesn’t rely on one scorer that Ohio State can key in on stopping. The Flyers also score a bunch in transition and can get some easy buckets before the Buckeyes can get the defense set. On the other end, the Flyers should be able to force some turnovers as well.
The bad: If Dayton starts out slowly and doesn’t shoot well, it can get in a hole quickly. Like most teams that shoot a lot of three-pointers, one cold game could spell doom for Dayton. The Flyers don’t have any terrific defensive stoppers either and have a bad habit of fouling a ton.
The Bottom Line: Dayton has the style and scoring ability to surprise a team or two in the tournament. The balance of the offense should match the team up well with Ohio State, and that game will likely come down to the wire. The Syracuse Orange haven’t exactly inspired confidence lately either, and it’s easy to imagine Dayton’s style giving the Orange trouble as well. If you aren’t buying what Ohio State and Syracuse are selling, Dayton is a team that you can pencil in for two victories.
