Each year there are teams that have the potential to lose very early or make a Final Four run. These are the teams that will ruin your bracket.
The Michigan State Spartans are one of the favorites to win the NCAA Tournament. Coming off a Big 10 championship and finally healthy, the Spartans look primed for a deep run. But can this team be trusted?
The good: Michigan State’s lineup is very well balanced, and the offense is led by legitimate stud Gary Harris. Adreian Payne‘s versatility is incredibly valuable, as he can stretch the floor on offense but also play tough interior defense. Tom Izzo always has his team ready to play come tournament time, and this team is certainly talented enough to go far.
The bad: The team’s lack of depth was exposed when the injuries hit, so foul trouble to any of the starters could spell doom for Michigan State. There is also something to be said for a team only having a few games to get used to each other. The Cincinnati Bearcats and Sean Kilpatrick loom in the third round, and he could pose matchup problems for the Spartans.
The bottom line: It might scare some that Michigan State is such a trendy pick, but it is trendy for a reason. The Spartans’ starting lineup is among the best in the nation, and Izzo is obviously an excellent coach. In a fairly weak East Region, the Spartans emerge as the favorites. If the Villanova Wildcats‘ loss to the Seton Hall Pirates scares you and you believe Izzo can keep his stars out of foul trouble, the Spartans should be your Final Four team.
