The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament bracket was finally released on Sunday night! Now it’s time for everyone to make their selections. The selection committee got all of the at-large selections correct (maybe SMU got snubbed), but the seeding was not perfect. One team that is seeded correctly as a No. 1 seed is Florida. Here are five reasons the Gators belong as one of the four No. 1 seeds.
The Gators went 15-0 in SEC in the regular season. They were the only team to finish the season undefeated in conference play in the SEC.
After going 15-0 in the SEC in the regular season, the Gators then won another three games to finish the sweep and win the SEC tournament in addition to the regular season. Florida beat Missouri (72-49), Tennessee (56-49) and Kentucky (61-60) en route to the conference title.
The Gators were ranked No. 1 in the nation going into the SEC Tournament. Florida then won their conference tournament. How could they possibly move down enough spots to not be a No. 1 seed?
Florida finished the regular season with a 29-2 overall record. Once their SEC Tournament wins are included, they finished 32-2 overall. The only team with a better record is undefeated Wichita State who finished the season 34-0. Keep in mind that while Wichita State is a great basketball team, they play in the Missouri Valley Conference which is not as a strong as the SEC.
Just watch Florida play basketball. They look like one of the four best teams in the nation. This does not mean they will win the NCAA Tournament. They are one of a handful of teams with a legitimate shot at the title, but a No. 1 seed does not always win it all.
