While you have to resist the temptation to go with a bunch of higher seeds, you don’t want to be the guy picking upsets just because you want to make a big splash. The 8-9 game is the obvious spot to find upsets (technically) in the opening round, but even though Florida Gulf Coast made a Sweet Sixteen run from the No. 15 seed in 2013, the 15-2 upset has happened just seven times in tournament history. Choose your spots wisely early on.

Yes, the top seeds have the best road to the Final Four – in theory. In reality, once you get to the Sweet 16, at least one or two of them are likely to drop. According to ESPN Stats and Information, more top seeds have lost in the Sweet 16 than have made the Final Four since 2009. If your bracket has all the top seeds making it to Dallas, you might want to think a little more outside the box.

Long gone are the days of the power conference teams just walking all over the smaller schools. Remember when nobody had heard of Gonzaga since John Stockton? Look out for teams like No. 12 (west) North Dakota State and No. 9 (East) George Washington could be Cinderella stories if they’re taken lightly, and they’ll bust your bracket if you just pick the big-name team on rep alone.

We all love it when the powerhouses fall to teams with players we’ve never seen or heard of before. They call it “March Madness” for a reason. But the best chance to find your champion is in the top three seeds. The last time anybody seeded outside the top three cut down the nets was when Lute Olson and Arizona won in 1997. They were a No. 4 seed. These teams are at the top for a reason.

You can spend hours and hours poring over endless amounts of information: BPI, RPI, good wins, bad losses, coaches’ bios, players’ Facebook pages, and never get any closer to the perfect bracket. Warren Buffett is putting up billion for perfection because – shocker - it just will not happen. The sooner you realize that you’re going to miss a few along the way, the easier it will be to focus on the bigger games.
