Back in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, the VCU Rams made a shocking run into the Final Four and appeared to be contenders for the national championship. Although the team hasn't reached the Final Four since that year, there is no doubt that the Rams still have the potential to make it even further. With that said, ladies and gentlemen, here are five reasons why VCU will win the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Universally praised as one of college basketball’s best coaches, Shaka Smart knows what it takes to take his team all the way. The best coach in the history of VCU basketball, Smart could be the difference between a first-round exit and a championship victory.
Although VCU’s offense isn’t nearly as good as their lockdown defense, the Rams still have a very solid offense. If VCU’s shooters can get hot at the right time, the team could make the championship run.
The Rams do a great job of wearing down their opponents due mainly to the fact that they set the tempo of the game and run with it. There aren't many teams that play with the same intensity as VCU right now.
The leader of the team, junior guard Treveon Graham, is a major reason why the Rams are even in the tournament. Graham is a great scorer who plays solid defense and is one of the most complete players out there right now.
VCU has a suffocating defense. Called the “havoc” defense for good reason, VCU does a phenomenal job of forcing turnovers and scoring points of those turnovers. When it’s all said and done, VCU’s stellar defense may be the reason the Rams are national champions.
