Michigan Wolverines‘ Nik Stauskas is heading to the NBA (via USA Today Sports). Stauskas would have easily been one of the best players in the country if he would have returned. Regardless, he is making the right choice by declaring for the draft.
All seemed lost for the Wolverines when Mitch McGary went down with an injury. However, players like Stauskas stepped up in a big way. After all, Stauskas was the Big Ten Player of the Year.
As a sophomore, Stauskas averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 44.2 percent from behind the arc. He made 92 three-pointers in the process.
Would Stauskas have benefited from playing another year in college hoops? Most likely, but his draft stock is pretty high and there is not much more he can do at the college level. Well, he could win the Naismith and lead Michigan to a national championship, but the Big Ten POY award will just have to do.
What makes Stauskas so special is the fact that he is an amazing shooter. If left open, he will make opposing teams pay every single time. He isn’t going to be the No. 1 pick or anything like that, but he is the best shooter in the draft if you ask me. That makes him a very hot commodity this summer. It helps that he stands at 6-foot-6 as well — good size for an NBA shooting guard.
Stauskas isn’t going to be the most athletic SG at the next level, but he already has a very, very good shot and his game in general is only going to get better.
