College athletes seem to be transferring much more these days. You never used to hear about top players from smaller colleges transferring after they graduate to a bigger school, but it’s expected every offseason nowadays. Niagara Purple Eagles‘ star Antoine Mason is the next to join that ever-growing list of transfers.
The Michigan State Spartans are looking to fill their roster with key pieces after losing Gary Harris to the NBA and Russell Byrd to a transfer. It also looks like Alex Gauna will be giving up basketball after graduating this year and that leaves three open roster spots for scholarship players.
Could the Spartans go after Mason? It’s possible.
While Tom Izzo is hot on the trail of a few other transfers, including Denzel Valentine‘s high school teammate, he could still consider adding the nation’s second-leading scorer from the 2013-14 season in Mason.
The senior guard averaged 25.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season while possessing quite the NBA-ready type of body.
However, playing at a small school like Niagara got him absolutely no exposure — making Michigan State an ideal destination for those looking for more exposure and a chance to play for a national title.
Mason could fill the role of Harris and contribute heavily on offense, although his three-point shooting is nothing short of pathetic at just 28.6 percent from a season ago.
If Izzo is serious about making a big run at a conference title in 2015, he will need to attempt to lure Mason.
Imagine Mason in a lineup with Valentine, Travis Trice and Branden Dawson — scary.
