The Atlantic 10 is one of the conferences in college basketball that consistently produces the most talented and most fun to watch mid-major teams. Perhaps the most open conference in college basketball going into the 2014-15 season, the A-10 will be decided by which teams are able to hold on to wins late in the season. Here are the top five contenders for the A-10 going into next season.

A-10 Freshman of the Year E.C. Matthews will be aided by the arrival of a decent recruiting class, as well as experience off the bench. Rhode Island will take some time to mesh, but this team could be an NIT lock at the end of the season.

4. Dayton Flyers

The Dayton Flyers surprised many with their run to the Elite Eight in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and should build on that success by being the sleeper team in the A-10.

3. UMass Minutemen

Although UMass will miss the leadership of Chaz Williams, the Minutemen should be able to compete for an NCAA Tournament berth as well as the conference.

2. George Washington Colonials

Head coach Mike Lonergan took this team from an expected close-to-last finish during the 2013-14 preseason to one of the most exciting teams in the conference. George Washington loses key veteran players, but has the depth to once again compete in the A-10.

1. VCU Rams

Shaka Smart may have the most talented team he’s had since their deep tournament run a few years ago. VCU underperformed last season, so hopefully this will be their year to shine.
