The Big East was one of the most competitive and all-around talented conferences to watch in college basketball last season. Villanova, Creighton and Xavier fought for dominance all season long, just to be upended by Providence in the Big East tournament. With several talented squads returning, here are the top five contenders for the Big East for the 2014-15 season.
Doug McDermott is irreplaceable. However, Creighton boasts a well-rounded team defensively and a plethora of players who could go off for 20 or more points a night.
The Xavier Musketeers consistently have good teams, but tend to lack the togetherness necessary to earn a solid NCAA Tournament berth early on in the season. The loss of Semaj Christon and Justin Martin will hurt them offensively, but defensively this team should be tough.
Leading scorer Bryce Cotton is gone, but the Providence Friars have a solid squad. If the team can figure out an identity early in the season, Providence is a dangerous team moving forward.
Not only do the Georgetown Hoyas return their entire starting lineup from the year before, but Georgetown has some impact freshmen coming into the squad for this season. Georgetown is a sleeper team for a deep 2015 NCAA Tournament run as well.
Villanova is the favorite to win the Big East as well as a contender for the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Jay Wright is a fantastic coach and, with the key players returning, the Wildcats are set for a major year.
