While Rutgers has struggled on the basketball court in recent years, the Scarlet Knights hope their move to the Big Ten for 2014-15 foreshadows greater success on the horizon. Here are five key games for coach Eddie Jordan and the Scarlet Knights as they begin their inaugural season in the Big Ten.

The Scarlet Knights take on their first power-conference foe of the season when they face Vanderbilt at the Barclays Classic in Brooklyn. A win against the Commodores would provide some momentum for a Rutgers squad featuring just three seniors.

The Scarlet Knights enter their first ACC/Big Ten Challenge with game against coach Brad Brownell and the Clemson Tigers. Littlejohn Coliseum is never an easy venue for opponents, and with the Tigers coming off a 23-win campaign last season, Rutgers will find out a lot about the team in their first true road game of 2014-15.

While Rutgers may be moving to the Big Ten in 2014-15, they’ll maintain their in-state rivalry with former Big East foe Seton Hall this season. With bragging rights on the line, expect an intense battle between the two teams when they meet in Newark in December.

The Scarlet Knights open Big Ten play with two consecutive home games, the first of which will be against Northwestern. A win over the Wildcats would open some eyes around the league while also boosting confidence for the rest of the season.

Rutgers will renew their basketball rivalry with Penn State when they host the Nittany Lions in the second of their two-game, conference-opening homestand. Much like their contest with Northwestern, a win over Penn State would give the Scarlet Knights confidence heading into the remainder of Big Ten play.
