Top 5 Non-ACC Matchups for Georgia Tech

Excitement wouldn't have been one of the words used to describe the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets a season ago. Often struggling to find points, Georgia Tech finished 281st in the country in scoring at less than 67 points a game. On three occasions in ACC play, the Yellow Jackets failed to even sniff 50. Still, coming off a 16-17 record and a second-round exit in the ACC Tournament, Georgia Tech has five intriguing non-league games you should see.

Georgia Tech's entry into the ACC/Big 10 Challenge figures to be one of the lower scoring games of the event, as two teams that won't blow out any light bulbs on their respective scoreboards get together in Evanston, Ill. While important for the sake of the Challenge, this game is also a test for both teams as they look to improve their stock in 2014-15, especially a Northwestern club that still has never made the NCAA Tournament.

Another game where points may be hard to come by will likely be Georgia Tech's home game against the Vanderbilt Commodores on Dec. 20. Both teams finished a game under .500 a season ago and as bad as the Yellow Jackets were offensively, the Commodores were actually worse, finishing 312th (of about 345 teams) in scoring at about 65 points per game. If Tech can't beat the likes of Vandy and Northwestern, it might be a long season.

It's new era in Milwaukee, as former head coach Buzz Williams left after last season to take the job at one of Georgia Tech's ACC rivals, Virginia Tech. The Golden Eagles were 17-15 last season and 9-9 in the Big East. The man on the sidelines now for Marquette will be no stranger to ACC folks. Former Duke player and assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski debuts this season as Marquette's boss, making this matchup intriguing on a number of levels.

Were it not for its annual rivalry with Georgia, Georgia Tech's game at Dayton on Dec. 23 would serve as the Yellow Jackets' most exciting test. The Flyers won 26 games a season ago and advanced all the way to the Elite Eight, before falling to Florida by 10 in the South Regional Final. Dayton also beat Georgia Tech early last season, 82-72, in Atlanta. If the Yellow Jackets return the favor here, Georgia Tech may be more improved than we think.

While the Georgia-Georgia Tech hoops series doesn't really feature much of the bad blood that has been seen between the football teams over the years, there still would be no better way for the Yellow Jackets to start their season than by beating the rival Bulldogs in Atlanta. Tech won at Georgia, 80-71, last season. Georgia Tech will be looking to extend its series winning streak over Georgia to four games.
