San Diego State has been firmly established as one of the West Coast’s top basketball powers during Steve Fisher’s 16-year tenure as head coach. Coming off another highly successful campaign in which the Aztecs won 31 games, more of the same is expected of San Diego State in 2014-15. Here are five early predictions for the Aztecs’ statistical leaders this season.

The imposing power forward returns to San Diego State after starting all 36 games for the Aztecs a season ago. Spencer became one of San Diego State’s best defenders in 2013-14, swatting away a team-leading 89 shots for the campaign. Now a junior, expect similar numbers from the 6-foot-10 Inglewood native.

Polee spent 2013-14 coming off the bench for the Aztecs. Now a senior, the 6-foot-7 forward figures to jump into a starting role after racking up 36 steals in just 17.9 minutes of action per game last season. If Polee continues to produce at a similar level in 2014-15, he should end up leading the team in steals before the end of the year.

With San Diego State looking to find a reliable point guard in 2014-15, more playmaking responsibility will fall on the versatile Shepard this season. Last year, he finished second on the team with 74 assists and might increase those numbers as the Aztecs break in a few new faces in the backcourt.

2. Angelo Chol – Rebounds

With Josh Davis no longer in the picture, San Diego State will look to others in their frontcourt to compensate for Davis’ team-leading average of 10.1 boards per game. Enter Chol, the Arizona transfer whose combination of size and athleticism could make him San Diego State’s top rebounder before 2014-15 comes to an end.

Xavier Thames is now gone, taking his 17.6 points per game scoring average with him. That should open the door for Shepard to become San Diego State’s primary option on offense. The 6-foot-8 forward finished second on the team with an average of 11.6 points per game in 2013-14 and should see those numbers increase as he enters his junior season with the Aztecs.
