College Basketball Top 25 Rankings: Week 2
The big day is finally here. OK, college basketball technically started on Friday, and it was awesome, but the Champions Classic takes place later on tonight, which features two solid matchups. Not much has happened early on in the 2014-15 CBB season. You know, Florida definitely didn't lose to Miami on Monday -- it did. Upsets can be expected early on and all season long. Before the big games tip-off later on, get your weekly dose of the top 25.
25. Syracuse Orange (2-0)
25. Syracuse Orange (2-0)
Just like many ranked teams early on, Syracuse has not been challenged. Regardless, Rakeem Christmas is off to a great start, as he is averaging 18 points and 12.5 boards in two contests so far.
24. Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0)
24. Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0)
Iowa can really get the nation's attention by knocking off Texas in its next game. The Longhorns have top 10 talent, so that is probably way easier said than done.
23. Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)
23. Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)
Marquette isn't getting as much buzz as it has in previous seasons, but I am sure the Ohio State Buckeyes would gladly take the win (play the Golden Eagles next). The Buckeyes have many questions entering the year, but what team doesn't?
22. Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0)
22. Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0)
As expected, Terran Petteway saw some success in the first game of the season. I doubt he will average 25 PPG on the year, but he might not be too far off that mark. After all, he did put up 18.1 per game last season.
21. Miami Hurricanes (2-0)
21. Miami Hurricanes (2-0)
In no way are the Miami Hurricanes the most talented team in the ACC, but they currently have the best win out of anyone. Former Kansas State Wildcat Angel Rodriguez put the Hurricanes on his back (dropped 24 points, including the game-winning three), and led his team to a win over Florida. No big deal. It wasn't like the Gators were ranked in the top 10 entering the game or anything like that (they were).
20. Michigan Wolverines (2-0)
20. Michigan Wolverines (2-0)
Michigan will have plenty of challenges in non-conference play (Oregon, Syracuse, SMU, Arizona), but right now it can enjoy its cupcake part of the schedule ... for one more game -- plays the Ducks on Nov. 24.
19. Oklahoma Sooners (1-0)
19. Oklahoma Sooners (1-0)
Oklahoma will take on Creighton next. Unfortunately for the fans who love great matchups, Doug McDermott is now playing in the NBA.
18. Michigan State Spartans (1-0)
18. Michigan State Spartans (1-0)
Michigan State only beat Navy by a few points in its first game. It has to shake it off (Taylor Swift style), and get ready for an epic matchup with the Duke Blue Devils.
17. San Diego State Aztecs (1-0)
17. San Diego State Aztecs (1-0)
San Diego State entered the year with a pretty solid ranking, but it can climb up a couple more spots with a win against Utah in game No. 2 of 2014-15.
16. Connecticut Huskies (1-0)
16. Connecticut Huskies (1-0)
Connecticut may have won the championship last season, but this is not last season. It has a lot of work it needs to do before it plays Texas. The only problem is the fact that the Huskies will take on the Longhorns on Nov. 30, which is right around the corner, or better yet, 12 days away (at the time of writing, of course).
15. Florida Gators (1-1)
15. Florida Gators (1-1)
It took just the second game of the season for Florida to lose its first game of the, well, season. Fear not Florida fans, Chris Walker will be back next game. Not to make up any excuses for the Gators, but Dorian Finney-Smith was also out, so basically two starters weren't in the lineup. Oh yeah, two other players weren't in the lineup either, for what it's worth. Translation: Florida will be just fine.
14. Iowa State Cyclones (2-0)
14. Iowa State Cyclones (2-0)
Iowa State has played two games and it has won both games. That is a pretty solid start in my book. The Cyclones have the chance to be special this year, but how far Georges Niang can take them is the real question.
13. VCU Rams (1-0)
13. VCU Rams (1-0)
Tennessee may have lost some talent from a team that reached the Sweet 16 last season, but a win over the Volunteers is not a bad way to start 2014-15 for the VCU Rams.
12. Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-0)
12. Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-0)
Speaking of solid starts, the Gonzaga Bulldogs already managed to beat the SMU Mustangs. This is one team that experts, fans, dogs, cats and really everyone seems to be going crazy about.
11. Wichita State Shockers (1-0)
11. Wichita State Shockers (1-0)
Wichita State went from one of the most loved teams in the 2012-13 NCAA tournament (made a run to the Final Four as a No. 9 seed) to everyone's least favorite team in 2013-14 (went undefeated for a very, very long time, became "overrated"). I'm curious to see how fans will perceive the Shockers this year.
10. Villanova Wildcats (2-0)
10. Villanova Wildcats (2-0)
Villanova should have no problem starting the season off with three straight wins. All bets are off once it takes on VCU on Nov. 24.
9. Texas Longhorns (2-0)
9. Texas Longhorns (2-0)
Texas takes on Iowa on Nov. 20 and Connecticut on Nov. 30. It will also play Kentucky on Dec. 5. I guess we are going to find out how good this Longhorns team really is early on in the season.
8. Louisville Cardinals (2-0)
8. Louisville Cardinals (2-0)
Louisville is 2-0 and Montrezl Harrell is going to be a star. That is all.
7. Virginia Cavaliers (2-0)
7. Virginia Cavaliers (2-0)
It's going to be interesting to see if Virginia can keep up with the big dogs in the ACC this year. Last year, the Cavaliers were the big dogs despite the fact that they didn't receive the credit they deserved until the selection committee gave them a No. 1 seed.
6. North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0)
6. North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0)
North. Carolina. Is. Going. To. Be. Really. Good. This. Season. Sorry for all the periods, I just wanted to get my point across.
5. Kansas Jayhawks (1-0)
5. Kansas Jayhawks (1-0)
Hopefully the Jayhawks are ready because they are taking on the Kentucky Wildcats later on today. Bragging rights will definitely be on the line in that one. A nice little resume booster as well, if you will.
4. Arizona Wildcats (2-0)
4. Arizona Wildcats (2-0)
These next four teams might as well all be ranked No. 1. That is how talented they all are. With that said, it would not be a surprise if the Wildcats grabbed a No. 1 seed in the dance, along with the other three teams ranked ahead of them in this poll.
3. Duke Blue Devils (2-0)
3. Duke Blue Devils (2-0)
Duke is averaging 111 points per game. I doubt it scores that many points on Michigan State, but man that would be awesome if the two traded basket after basket the entire night.
2. Wisconsin Badgers (2-0)
2. Wisconsin Badgers (2-0)
I hope college hoops fans have Dec. 3 circled on their calendars. That is the day Wisconsin and Duke take the court against one another.
1. Kentucky Wildcats (2-0)
1. Kentucky Wildcats (2-0)
Kentucky could lose its No. 1 ranking in a heartbeat if it doesn't knock off Kansas later on today. If you are not excited about that game, then you probably aren't a basketball fan (sorry, that was the best I could come up with).
