Villanova vs. VCU: Game Preview, Prediction
In an early season matchup between potential 2015 NCAA Tournament dark horses, the No. 12 Villanova Wildcats take on the No. 15 VCU Rams in the Legends Classic on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7pm EST on ESPN2.
Villanova had a scare last game against the Bucknell Bison, which they pulled out 72-65. Bucknell is an extremely talented team, so it’s no surprise that the Wildcats overlooked a team that they were expected to dominate. The game shouldn’t be a reflection of the talent and potential of Villanova, but should instead teach them not to underestimate any of their opponents.
VCU, on the other hand, have had the same sort of start to their season. The Rams were nearly upset by the Toledo Rockets, but hung on for an 87-78 win. Next to that, VCU has rolled. Shaka Smart’s team is ninth in the nation when it comes to points per game, and his high-energy coaching style shoes in this team’s 3-0 start to the season.
I think Villanova is the better team in this one, but on a neutral court, I give VCU the advantage just because of their style of basketball. Treveon Graham has played out of his mind to start the season, and Melvin Johnson has been a scoring machine from range.
Villanova is one of the most talented teams in the country, and is the clear favorite in the Big East, but I’m not sure this team is ready to start defeating elite opponents like they will be once tournament time comes around.
Prediction: VCU 76, Villanova 71
